Knittin' mittens

Sometime I just need a short project.  Mittens are perfect -- especially mittens for 6 year olds which are really only a weekend project.  We went to Niagara Falls, Canada for a long weekend on winter break and the mittens were a perfect project for the car and the hotel room.  Oh yeah, "Hi Candada!!!".  That's how my 6 year old, when she was 3, used to greet the border every time we came over the escarpment and could see the US/Canada bridges.  Erin has since corrected her pronounciation (they grow-up too fast) but still greets the border with the same enthusiasm.

The mittens were designed by Erin, my 6 year old, from a basket of balls of yarn that we dyed with kool-aid.  Dyeing with kool-aid is great fun and has the added bonus of leaving your house smelling like giant tropical fruit exploded.  It's a nice change in the middle of an upstate NY winter.  I'm not sure why Erin thought purple thumbs were important but they were a critical part of her design.  They are definitely a nice addition.

Here are the details:
Yarn: Knit Picks Wool of the Andes
Patten: Basic mittens by Ann Budd
Needles:  US size 5 (I like my mitten fabric dense to ward off the cold.)
Colors used: Lemonade, Pink Lemonade, Cherry and Grape.  I left the yarn in loose hanks when we dyed them to give the not-quite-solid effect.
