Designer dog vs mixed breed
I was doing the NY Times crossword from our paper on Monday and after finishing it (I always feel a little gloaty after finishing a NY Times crossword even if it is only Monday's), I flipped over the paper to look at the classifieds on the back. It was the Pet Place classifieds where people advertise dogs for sale. Now, I am a dog person and our dogs have always come from a rescue organization so to buy a dog from a breeder is admittedly a foreign concept to me. When did your basic mixed breed, dare I say "mutt", become designer dogs with designer price tags?
Here are some of the breed names that gave me paws. (Hahaha...Humor me, I have a cold.) There was the unfortunately named cock-a-poo (presumably a cocker spaniel crossed with a poodle), the even more unfortunately named shih-tsu-poo (I don't care how cute the dog is...that name doesn't bring any happy images to mind). Some of the others included labradoodle, goldendoodle, jugs (jack russel and pug mix? Obviously going for the single male 20-30 audience), pom-a-poo, peek-a-poo, york-a-poo, schnoodle (busy poodles), shorkie (I have no idea) and, I kid you not, shitese (which sounds like something one would find in a pharmacy).
Odd culture this.

Our current dog, Mumbles, a manchester terrier mix, came from the Rochester Animal Services League. Here's their link http://www.animalserviceleagueny.org/
(More knitting pictures next time...)
