I knit squid!
Now there's a teaser. Of course, there's a story.
Ick. I had the flu and it knocked me on my bum for a full 7 days. I haven't had the flu in probably 15 years and this bout reminded me why I continue to get my flu shot. The irony is, I made sure to get my flu shot this year too. The CDC just guessed wrong about which strain was going to be out and about. Hope they get it right next year. (A special thank you to my wonderful DH for canceling a business trip and taking such good care of me. )
Unfortunately, most of the time I felt badly enough I basically was just a lump on the couch. I did do a bit of knitting toward the end of the week as I was starting feel good enough to feel bad about just sitting on the couch. Here's the sentence I never thought I would type:
I knit squid!!

Kind of cute, ay? It was the perfect type of pattern for feeling nasty: no real consequences if I messed up, the pattern was easy and the results made someone happy. After I finished the first, each of my kids requested one of their own. The kind of featureless, blue-on-blue squid was a request from my 2 year old. I tried to explain that using a different color would make the eyes and mouth stand out but I still got the same answer. What color squid do you want? "Blue." What color eyes should it have? "Blue." You sure you want blue? "Blue." What color eyes? (Predictably) "Blue." Who am I to argue? Two year olds just will not appreciate color theory.
Details: Pattern from Clara Parkes book The Knitter's Book of Yarn. The pattern title says it makes octopi but with their rather torpedo shape, I think they look more like squid. Yarn: 100% cotton, Peaches and Cream
Did I mention the squid are well loved?

Squid aren't the oddest thing you've knitted. If I recall correctly, sometime in 1991 or 1992 you knit Dust Bunnies. Small yarn explosions intended to personify the skin cell/ filth amalgam that blows out from beneath furniture every now and then. I didn't think it odd at the time but now that the issue is on the table I'd definitely consider Dust Bunnies more esoteric than squid.
