For $16.47 plus shipping you too can own your own physical manifestation of irony.  Now admittedly, I am easily amused but I really think this is funny.  I'm sure it's a wonderful tome full of pith and insight but I would have to snicker every time I picked it up.  Probably not the desired reaction of the author.

Anyhow, I did some yarn dyeing yesterday and I like the way it turned out so here is the process I follow.

This is the, oh-so-exciting-soak-the-yarn-in-vinegar-and-water step to prepare it for the dye.
(Yarn is Knit Picks Essential Sock yarn in natural.)

Here are a group of colors I think I might use.  Generally I mix up more colors than I end up using just so I have options.  This time I'm using 1/4 teaspoon of Wilton cake dye to about 1/2 c of hot water and 1 tsp of vinegar for fairly saturated colors.  (I often use Kool-Aid as well.  The kitchen smells insanely fruity after.)

Applying the colors.  (I use food safe dyes rather than industrial dyes for a couple of reasons: First, currently there is a busy toddler and curious kindergartener in my house and the chemical distillates in the industrial dyes just present way too much of a poison potential. Secondly, I don't have to buy dedicated dyeing equipment -- pass the pyrex please.)

After all the dye is applied, I use paper towel to sop up as much as the excess water in the yarn as I can.  Even pressing the paper towel on the freshly dyed yarn, very little of the color comes up.  I wrap the yarn in the plastic wrap that's under it and put it in the microwave for about 4 minutes.  I leave the hot yarn to cool naturally over several hours.  A quick rinse in some warm water with Eucalan (wool wash) and then hang to dry which doesn't take very long this time of year.  Here's the yarn all ready to enter the queue waiting for a chance to be knit into socks.
