A Happy Random Wednesday

1.  I think the world is going to be a better place with Barack Obama as the next President of the United States.    I voted for him for so many reasons: He offers, for starters, a complete change from the last 8 years, he offers hope, he is intelligent, he is well-spoken, he is inspiring, I agree with him on almost all of his social, economic and political policies (I may actually land a tad more left of his social policies), he has mastered the 21st century media (eg. the internet, etc.), he chose a much more sensible Vice Presidential candidate, and he can lead. He was by far the best choice for the job.  With him go my hopes and prayers that he can realize his potential.  But for today,  it is enough that it dawns brighter.

2.  Oh, yeah.  Kind of skipped over Halloween, one of my favorite holidays.  The weather was better than we had any right to expect for October in western, NY.  Two days prior, it was snowing, yet Halloween day was sunny and warm - perfect for the parade at school.  And Halloween night was warm and dry -- perfect for legions of treat-or-treaters.  Here's my crew.

That would be Medusa, and dancing mermaid and a detective (although everyone though he was dressed as Indiana Jones.)

Do scary, kids:

Most creative costume I saw:

That's the muppet from the Mahna Mahna Song.  She even has a soundtrack to carry around with her. -- just made me laugh.  (Oh, her mom made the costume -- talented mom.)

And of course, you never know what might be lurking in the floor boards.

Boo!

3. Oh, I have been busy with knitting and spinning.  Lots of FOs.

That's a hat for my DDS that was one of her birthday presents (Still Happy Birthday!!).  Here are the details:

Pattern:
Amanda Hat by Gina House (from Ravelry)
Yarn:  Malabrigo bought at Lettuce Knits in Toronto at the beginning of October.  (I only bought 2 skeins and as you'll see there was plenty for a number of projects.)  It's the first time I've used Malabrigo and it is very soft --- definitely next to the skin soft.  Well, not that I would make underwear out of it or anything.  Too bulky.
Needles: US 8

Pattern:
Birthday Cowl  by Nova Seals (aptly named as it was for DDS also for her birthday.)
Yarn: Same as above
Needles: US 8

Pattern:
Crofter's Cowl by Gudrun Johnston -- now headband (also from Ravelry)
Yarn:  Yup, same one.
Needles: US 8

I was knitting this for a cowl but ran short of yarn and only did 5 repeats of the pattern rather than 3 repeats then another 3 then graft those together that the pattern actually calls for.  Megan asked who it was for, prompt put it on her head, said she liked it and the headband had a new owner.  Enjoy!

4.  WIP:  Here's my current work in progress...actually very nearly done.  Would that be AWVND (A work very nearly done, of course.)?

Pattern:
Fake-isle hat  from Ravelry in a large size as my head is well, large.  Not like Easter Island large or anything but plenty big enough to warrant a large size.
Yarn: Noro Kureyon in a descriptively named #154 and Patons Merino in black
Needles:  US 8

I just love the way the colors interplay.  Close up!

5.  And, last but not least, some spinning.

That is about 300 yds of an aran weight wool mix.  I bought the roving at the Finger Lakes Fiber Fest from
Nistock Farms because I wanted to spin something "rustic".  I'm really pleased the way it turned out....lofty, softer than I thought, and a rich, rich coffee color that has an unprocessed-it-came-from-a-sheep feel.   Actually it came from a number of sheep on her farm -- I love it when the farmers can name the sheep their wool comes from.   I'm still considering what it will be... a warm hat, warm mittens, warm scarf...whatever it will be will be warm.

And I have this bobbin of singles:

That is merino in Calypso from
Clover Leaf Farms  that I bought at Rhinebeck.  This might end up being mittens or socks.  Although the merino is really soft and I would be concerned that walking on the yarn would wear it through too fast.  We'll see.  Right now it's just all potential.

6.  Good out and enjoy the day!  Oh, and buy a paper, the headline is historic!
