These are a few of my favorite things.....
Happy New Year! I hope everyone has started out with a happy, healthy and peace filled New Year. We had quite a holiday. Starting with my DD1's birthday, then Christmas, then New Year's quickly followed by my birthday. Mid-January runs the risk of seeming a bit humdrum. So in lieu of post-Christmas blahs, let's review some of my favorite things about the holidays.
DD1's 10th Birthday:

DD1 decorated the cake herself (yes, those are lizards and snakes) and did a lovely job! She's growing up to be just a wonderful person!
Favorite Kid's Quotes:
My 3 year old: "I don't want to be ripped." Upon watching one of those yelling $19.99 commercials for a chin-up bar.
My 10 year old: "The knees of my jeans smell like the monkey house." Not your average conversion starter. In context, she had been to the zoo with a friend earlier that day. Though it begs the question, why was she crawling around the monkey house?
My 3 year old: "Daddy you're a GENIUS!" After my DH managed to assemble a Play Mobil toy with a gabillion and two pieces. (A "gabillion" is precisely 16 more pieces than any sane parent would want to put together Christmas morning.)
Favorite Christmas Decorations:

This is Headless Nut Baby. It's an ornament my mom or grandma gave to my DH and I when we first were married. Of course, it originally had a little nut head painted with a cute little baby's face but, sadly, the head wasn't attached well and kept popping off. So we glued it back on. It popped off, we glued it back on. This continued for several years until one year we just left the little nut head to rattle around the bottom of the Christmas decoration box. Thus the tradition of hanging little "Headless Nut Baby" on our tree began. The nut head continued to rattle around the bottom of the box for several years, until, predictably, we lost track of the little nut head. But every year, we eagerly look for the little bundle wrapped in tissue paper and my DH and I happily exclaim "It's the little Headless Nut Baby!" (we say it quite loud) and hang it prominently on the tree. (This whole process brings raised eyebrows from guests and looks of confusion from the kids which honestly, is half the fun.)

This is a red air fern that was given to me in the early 80's by one of my mom's friends. I insist that despite its rather ragged appearance, that it's still living. It's an air fern, right? All it needs is air. It's got that. My DH insists it probably died the first year it was put in a box and is just waiting to become dust if it's ever bumped the wrong way. Um, nah.
And of course,

This one makes an awesome, beaming down and beaming up noise. Good and loud too. Sounds just like the tree is beaming down to some unknown planet then beaming back. I have quite thegeeky extensive collection of Star Trek ornaments.

My other favorite is the first in the whole Star Trek ornament series -- the shuttle craft with an actual recording of Spock saying "Shuttle Craft to Enterprise. Shuttle Craft to Enterprise. Spock here. Happy Holidays. Live long and prosper." And the best thing, if you keep hitting the "on" button, you can make Spock rap. <Giggle. snort.>
Favorite toys:
Kids:

Santa brought all the kids indoor sandboxes to play in. I love watching the adventures emerge.
Mine:

My Doctor Who Sonic Screwdriver, of course.

Everyone got in on that action. (Did I mention it came with a matching sonic ballpoint pen? Awesome!) Oh, I'm a happy geek.
Favorite Holiday Meal:

Our Christmas dinner of corned beef, cabbage and boiled potatoes. Not traditional but, oh so yummy. A number of family members don't like ham and I just made a turkey for Thanksgiving, so we roll with it and go for what everyone likes.
Most favorite thing of all:
Of course, having our home filled with family.

(Hey, DB (dear brother) somehow you managed to ellude me and my camera?!)
Of course there was lots of knitting and spinning, but I'll save that for the next post.
Happy New Year, everyone!

And I will continue to elude photographic devices until you learn to spell elude.

Well, off the top of my head, the words "as" and "pop," and the name of the river/country, "Niger" don't benefit from an extra letter.

Ah, true. But "biter" is a bit improved with a extra letter..though is sometimes a difficult pill to swallow. And "Coma". And certainly "bob" gets way more fun.
