Is it cold enough for 'ya?

I don't know what it is, but when it drops below 10F my offbeat sense of humor compels me to ask people that question.  Day one of the near 0F temperatures, people giggled and answered "Why, yes, it is cold enough."  Today, which is day five of these fingertip freezing temps, people are growling at me when I ask that question.  Yet, I still ask it.  Many more days of this and I'm going to have to start ducking right crosses when I greet people with that question.  I suppose I could stop asking.......  so   .... Is it cold enough for 'ya?

Anyhow here's a poem I gleaned from the
Yarn Harlot's comments yesterday...

WINTER IN SOUTH DAKOTA
Author Unknown

It's winter in South Dakota
And the gentle breezes blow
Seventy miles an hour
At twenty-five below

Oh, how I love South Dakota
When the snow's up to your butt
You take a breath of winter
And your nose gets frozen shut

Yes, the weather here is wonderful
So I guess I'll hang around
I could never leave South Dakota
'Cause I'm frozen to the ground

Feel free to substitute any of your locales instead of South Dakota.  Certainly, "Rochester", "Buffalo" (Hi, Dear Dad!) , "Cortland, Ohio" (Hi, Dear Sister!) would all be applicable at this point.

Not surprisingly, I've felt the need to knit items that keep people warm.

A nice ear flap hat for DH made from my own handspun yarn.  He's such a good guy, posed and smiled like I asked so I could take a picture.  He's probably thinking "What is up with these #*&*%#  icicles!"

Details:
Pattern: Swell from Kimmie Kemper (that's a name with some alliteration!) on Ravelry
Yarn:  The browns: My own hand spun BFL fiber.  Warm and wonderfully soft
            The green:  Berroco Ultra Alpaca
Needles: US 8
Mods:  As my whole family seems to be descended from the
statues on Easter Island....had to make the hat bigger around and deeper.

And some mittens front and back:

I had actually planned these to be for me, but due to not checking my gauge...

They fit DD#2, who adores them because they are full of mommy love. (Isn't that the cutest?  She told me that while we were standing outside waiting for the morning school bus -- I would have cried but my tears would have frozen.)

Details:
Pattern:  Squirrel and Oak Mittens by Adrian Bizilia
Yarn:  Knit Picks Telemark in reindeer heather and fjord heather (That's a weird letter combination to type "F" followed by "J".)
Needles: US 3
Mods: None

It's the first time I've made nordic style mittens.  It's interesting that there is no thumb gusset -- the thumb comes from live stitches picked up right from the palm. Uses less yarn -- very frugal.

And just in case you need something to make you laugh today:

There's an ad at the beginning but it's worth the wait.
